The talk will give details about the history of the East India Company and the India Office up to independence in 1947. It will show how the company became the de facto government of India with its own armies and civil service. The company was disbanded after the Indian Mutiny in 1858 and its responsibilities were taken over by the India Office of the UK Government. Details of the type of records available will be given to assist family historians who have ancestors who served in India in the army, civil service or commercial companies.
